How to sharpen a serrated knife
It is possible, it is slow, and for a $16 bread knife it is usually not worth doing. Here is the method that works, the one that ruins the knife, and how to tell which knives deserve the effort.

A serrated edge is not one edge. It is a row of small curved bevels — the gullets — separated by points, and on almost every kitchen serrated knife the grind is on one side only, with the other face left flat. Sharpening it means restoring each gullet individually at the right angle with an abrasive that fits inside it, then deburring the flat back. That is a genuinely different job from sharpening a straight edge, and it is why most advice about knives simply does not apply.
Before you start: for most people the honest answer is not to. A serrated bread knife dulls very slowly because the load spreads across many teeth and the points sit slightly proud of the board, and a good one can run a decade. What you need
- A tapered ceramic or diamond sharpening rod, thin enough to sit inside the smallest gullet on your knife. A cylindrical rod of one diameter will not fit varying gullet sizes, which is why tapered rods exist.
- A fine flat stone, a strop, or a piece of fine wet-and-dry paper on a flat surface, for deburring the back.
- Good light, and patience. This takes twenty minutes or more, not five.
The method, step by step
1. Find the ground side. Look along the edge. One face has visible bevels cut into each scallop; the other is flat. All the sharpening happens on the beveled side. If you grind the flat side you will change the geometry permanently and reduce the serrations to nothing.
2. Match the rod to the gullet. Slide the tapered rod into a gullet until it contacts the whole curve. Too thin and you will cut a groove in the middle of the scallop; too thick and it will only touch the points. The right diameter fills the curve.
3. Match the existing angle.Tilt the rod to sit flush with the bevel already there rather than inventing your own angle. The factory bevel is the reference. If you cannot see it clearly, color the bevel with a marker and take one light stroke — where the ink is removed shows your angle is right.
4. Stroke away from the edge, and count. Two to five light strokes per gullet, always in the same direction, rotating the rod slightly as you go. Use the same number of strokes on every gullet or the edge will end up uneven. This is the slow part and there is no shortcut.
5. Deburr the flat side.Each gullet you sharpen throws a burr onto the flat back. Lay the flat face dead flat on a fine stone or strop and take a few very light passes along the whole length. Flat means flat — any angle here starts a second bevel and undoes the point of a single-ground edge.
6. Test on paper. A restored serrated edge should catch and saw through printer paper with almost no pressure. If it tears rather than cutting, you have missed gullets or left a burr.
What destroys a serrated knife
A pull-through sharpener. The carbide or ceramic Vs grind across the tops of the teeth, flattening the points into a ragged straight edge. Two or three passes and the serrations are gone permanently. This is the single most common way serrated knives die.
An electric sharpener without a serrated stage.Same failure, faster. Only use one if the manufacturer explicitly states it handles serrations — a small number do, and they are listed as such in our electric sharpener roundup.
A flat bench stone. A flat abrasive cannot reach into a curved gullet. It only touches the points, which is exactly the wrong place to remove metal.
A honing rod used as normal. Running a serrated knife along a standard honing steel does nothing useful and can roll the points over.
When to sharpen and when to replace
Sharpen if the knife is forged, expensive, or one you specifically like — a premium German or Japanese serrated knife is worth the twenty minutes and will take several restorations over its life. Replace if it is an inexpensive stamped bread knife whose replacement costs less than an hour of your time, if the points are visibly rounded flat rather than merely dull, or if someone has already run it through a pull-through sharpener. Once the tooth geometry is gone there is nothing to restore.
The other serrated blades in your kitchen
Serrated paring and tomato knives follow the same rules but are small enough that replacement is almost always the sensible answer. Steak knives with micro-serrations are effectively unserviceable at home. And offset or double-serrated bread knives — teeth cut into larger teeth — are harder again, because the secondary serrations are too small for any rod; treat those as consumables regardless of price.
How to make one last longer
Cut on wood or plastic, never on a plate, stone or glass board — the points take the impact and blunt first. Store it where nothing touches the edge, which for a long serrated blade usually means a magnetic strip or an edge guard rather than a crowded drawer; see best knife storage.
