The Edge Bench is written and edited by Stephen V., an enthusiast — someone genuinely into knives, cooking gear and the small satisfaction of a properly sharp edge. That is the honest framing, and it is the whole framing. I am not a trained chef, I do not hold a culinary credential, and I do not run a test lab. What I do is read the manuals, compile the published specifications, do the value math, and cite every source. No lab coat.

Here is why that matters. The best-known review sites in this category lead with credentialed bylines and real test kitchens — trained chefs, sharpness machines, decades of tenure. Those are genuine advantages, and we are not going to pretend we have them. Instead we compete on the one thing we can prove and you can check: a published, reproducible method built entirely on public data.

What we do

• Compile published specifications — steel type and hardness (HRC), edge angle, blade geometry, weight and balance, forged vs stamped construction — from manufacturer listings.
• Run the value math— a transparent "spec quality ÷ live price" score that points at the knife giving you the most for your money, which is usually not the most expensive one.
• Show live, date-stamped prices pulled from Amazon, with the date on every page. When we do not have a verified live price, we show none rather than a stale number.
• Name a knife to skip in every roundup, because a page that likes everything is selling, not reviewing.

What we do not do

This list matters as much as the one above, because it is where trust is usually lost:

• We do not run a test lab, and we never claim to have hands-on tested a knife we have not. Our scores are judgments from documented specs and standards, and we say so on every page. Read exactly how on our how we review page.

• We invent nothing — no fabricated ratings, review counts, prices, or testing claims. Ever.
